I Want to Get on Facebook: How Do I Use Facebook?

With 2.2 billion active monthly uses, Facebook is the most popular social network in the world.

People flock there seeking everything from a slice of entertainment to a sense of purpose and belonging. You may be thinking now “I want to get on Facebook too, but I’m not sure how to use this platform”.

Well, if that is the case, fret not.

It’s never too late the join the biggest digital party on the face of the earth. We’ve compiled a comprehensive guide with tips for using Facebook with ease.

Setting up the Account

Facebook is a rather user-friendly environment that involves a minimum learning curve.

Signing up is the first order of business. Visit the Facebook homepage or use the Facebook mobile app.

There, you have several fields to fill before you can log in:

First name
Last name
Mobile number
Email
Birthday
Gender

Sort out and double-check all the details and select “Sign Up”. Doing that gets you through the gate, but there’s a caveat. You’re handing over personal information to one of the largest companies of today.

Privacy Settings

To remain in control of your data as much as possible, adjust your privacy settings.

These settings let you determine who can see your profile, photos, and other information.

So, find the downward pointing arrow on the top right corner of the page. Click on “Settings” and then “Privacy” in the left sidebar. Employ this option to designate groups or individuals that can see your posts.

It’s also possible to decide how you want others to be able to find and reach you out. There are no hard rules here. Your choices depend on your personal preferences and how much you value privacy.

Customizing the Profile

This is where all the fun begins.

Through personalization, you set yourself apart from the crowd and make it easier for others to connect with you. There are three mains features that let you do that:

Profile picture
Cover photo
Personal information

To choose your profile picture, navigate to the circle on the left-hand side and click “Edit Profile Picture”. You can pick a photo you’re tagged in or upload one from your computer. Notice Facebook also enables you to set a frame for the picture.

Moving on, the cover photo dominates the top of the profile section. To upload it, select the camera icon in the top right corner. It opens a small menu with a handful of options, most of which are the same as when uploading a profile picture.

When it comes to personal information, it’s entirely optional. In case you do want to flesh out the profile in this way, go to the “About” section. There are a number of fields relating to your work, education, relationship status, contact info, etc.
