Netflix’s Love The Way U Lie Review: Let Your Past Go and Fall in Love!

Love The Way U Lie premiered on Netflix on 19th August 2020. The rom-com from the Philippines stars Xian Lim, Alex Gonzaga, and Kylie Verzosa alongside other cast members, and is directed by RC Delos Reyes.

The Psychic, The Ghost, and The Husband

The story revolves around Stacey (Alex Gonzaga), a psychic, who starts hearing Sara (Kylie Verzosa), who has been dead for a year now. Sara’s husband Nathan (Xian Lim), however, hasn’t moved on yet. Sara’s spirit seeks out Stacey for help since she is the only person who can hear her.

The journey Nathan and Stacey go through is adorable and heartwarming. While a lot of rom-coms have a funny premise, Love The Way U Lie has a plot that not only has a comic note to it but also a sweet message.

In the process of helping Nathan move on, sparks begin to fly between him and Stacey and it brings with itself the strong feeling of loss of a beloved and gain of a lover. While the character of Stacey at the first go looks all jolly, there is more depth to her. She has her own fair share of struggles and pain that she hides beneath her smile with perfection. Her character is relatable in every sense.

The movie induces in its viewers a sense of true love, loss, and beauty of a relationship and how much being invested into something deeply breaks a person down when the other half is no more.

Stream It or Skip It

STREAM IT! Love The Way U Lie captures the beauty of a relationship, the sense of loss, and the feeling of falling in love in a beautiful way. While the story is not very fresh, the way it is told is watch-worthy.

The film also made me want to explore Philippines movies and culture as the film made me feel more emotions than I thought it would. Love The Way U Lie is a beautifully-drawn movie with its heart in the right place.
