Ghost of Tsushima Gameplay Reveals It Is The Assassin’s Creed Game Fans Have Been Asking For
In its latest State of Play episode, Sony revealed a hefty chunk of gameplay from the upcoming PS4 exclusive Ghost of Tsushima . The gameplay demo showcased various aspects like exploration, combat, and stealth, but one thing seemed extremely clear – this is the Assassin’s Creed game fans have been wanting for years.
Ghost of Tsushima takes place during the first Mongol invasion of Japan, set on the Tsushima island. In the revealed gameplay, developers from Sucker Punch walked the audience through aspects like combat and exploration, but what piqued my interest was the stealth section. It looked eerily similar to that found in an Assassin’s Creed title, and that’s not a knock on Sucker Punch.
Let’s talk a little bit about the game itself first. Visually, it looks gorgeous , but we knew that already from the E3 demo that blew everyone away a couple of years ago. Now, with the game being just 2 months away from release, it was time to see more about the smaller gameplay aspects.
Sucker Punch did not disappoint with the reveal. Right from the start, we get to see how exploration works, and the developer has a unique spin on it. Instead of relying on map markers and intrusive UI elements on the HUD, Tsushima will have an almost UI-less travel system. The blowing gusts of wind we keep seeing in the game’s marketing isn’t just there for fluff, it actually acts like a waypoint system to guide Jin , the protagonist.
Collectibles were also showcased as having a real, tangible effect on customization, which in turn affects combat/stealth abilities. In Ghost of Tsushima , Jin’s cosmetics will, in fact, affect his abilities (or lack thereof) in combat. Speaking of which, we saw a dedicated section to that as well and it also looks great. Since the game is all about being a samurai, precision matters. This isn’t a game where you’ll be mashing the attack button (although you probably will), but combat needs to be carefully planned out.
And then came the stealth section, which looks like Assassin’s Creed but better . You’re an actual Samurai here. Of course, stealth is going to be better! You can throw pebbles to distract guards, get the drop, and then “assassinate” enemies. Yep. With a Samurai longsword. Now that’s awesome. You can also use your bow to take out enemies quietly, or aggressively, depending on your wish (and mood). Who knows, maybe the upcoming Viking-themed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will improve upon the series’ stealth mechanics.
The game will also include light parkour mechanics similar to that in Horizon Zero Dawn, another excellent PS4 exclusive. The ranged combat also looks familiar to it.
It certainly looks like Sucker Punch has crafted this game with immense attention to detail. After the Infamous franchise, Ghost of Tsushima looks like a different beast. It’s quite similar to CD Projekt RED’s decision to move away from...
