RCI 2970 only putting out 20w
RCI 2970 only putting out 20w

Description: The 10-meter radio has been functioning well, leading to the purchase of another 10-meter radio (RCI 2970, not the DX model) from an online auction. It operates correctly and appears to be unused. However, it only outputs 20 watts instead of the expected 100 watts. The seller is unwilling to accept a return, leaving the user with a 20-watt radio. While 20 watts can still achieve long-distance communication, as experienced with a previous 25-watt RS HTX-10, there is a desire to repair the radio, provided the repair cost does not exceed the price of a functioning used RCI 2970.

The RCI 2970 is a versatile 10-meter transceiver designed for amateur radio use. It typically features a power output capability of up to 100 watts, allowing for effective long-range communication. The radio operates on the 10-meter band, which is popular among amateur radio enthusiasts, particularly during periods of high solar activity that enhance propagation conditions.

When troubleshooting the issue of reduced output power, several factors should be considered. First, it is essential to verify the power supply to ensure it meets the radio's requirements. Insufficient voltage or current can lead to power output limitations. Next, inspecting the internal components, such as the final amplifier stage, can reveal issues such as damaged transistors or faulty connections that may inhibit performance.

Additionally, checking the settings and configurations of the radio is crucial. Incorrect settings can lead to reduced output power. It is advisable to consult the user manual for proper configuration and operational guidance. If the radio has been modified or improperly tuned, returning it to factory specifications may be necessary.

For repairs, it is recommended to obtain quotes from certified technicians who specialize in radio repairs to assess whether the cost of fixing the radio is justified compared to purchasing a used unit. If the repairs are minor, such as replacing a faulty component or recalibrating the device, it may be worth proceeding. However, if extensive repairs are required, evaluating the market for a reliable used RCI 2970 could provide a more cost-effective solution.

In summary, addressing the power output issue of the RCI 2970 requires a systematic approach, considering the power supply, internal components, and configuration settings, while weighing the cost of repairs against the value of a working unit.10m has been going so well I bought another 10m radio (RCI 2970not the dx model)from an online auction. It works fine and looks like it`s never been used. BUT it`s only doing 20w out when it`s supposed to do 100W. Seller will not take the radio back. Alas I`d stuck here with a 20w radio. 20w is not bad I`ve talked Dx all over with my now gone 25w RS HTX-10. Still I`d really like to get the radio fixed but don`t want to do so if the price is more than a working used 2970.

Any thoughts? Please..
