Switching regulator charges NiMH batteries

In Figure 1, an MC34063A switching regulator and an MC33342 NiMH battery-charger IC combine to generate from an unregulated power supply a 600-mA battery charger for one to four NiMH cells.



Using some tricks with the current limit and the feedback network, you can make a simple dc/dc converter into a programmable current source for NiMH charging. IC1 operates in continuous mode in the buck converter without the output capacitor. The eliminat
